A kitchen of my own!

Even though I'd decided to keep this blog strictly about baking, I was so excited about this that I had to share... and I've managed to put a baking spin on it, too.

This week, my boyfriend and I found our first home! So, as long as our rental application goes through OK, we'll be moving to Frodsham, Cheshire in a few weeks' time. I can't wait! A big part of the excitement comes from finally having a kitchen of my own. I've only ever lived at home, or in shared uni accommodation and so I really can't wait to have a kitchen that I don't have to share with anyone (because I don't think Mike is going to spend much time in there, apart from when he does the washing up, of course!). Hopefully this also means that I'll be able to bake a lot more, too.

It's difficult to know how much stuff to share about myself on my blog. When I first started it, I wanted to keep it fairly anonymous, and pretty much baking only. But I want to appear friendly, too - especially as I'm reading and commenting on other people's blogs - seems odd to read about and comment on other people's lives, without really sharing much about myself.

Anyway, it's something I'll have to give a bit more thought to, I guess. But for now, here's some coffee cupcakes I made last week for a friend. I was quite pleased with them, especially the coffee buttercream! The lighting was really bad though, so I didn't get any decent photos at all, but I thought the gingerbread man decorations that I found in Lakeland were too cute not to share!

The simple things

A post I read recently by The Domestic Novice made me feel a lot better about my recent baking activity. Now that it's well known among friends and family that I enjoy baking, when birthdays and occasions roll around it's possibly almost expected that I'll whip something up... not that I mind, of course! But because I've been baking a while, I feel like I'm past the stage where if I make something rubbish, it can be passed off as 'awww, she's trying, bless her!' - which means I hesitate to try something new or different for a special occasion.

So for two recent birthdays, I played it safe and went for batches of simple vanilla or chocolate cupcakes.

They were well received, but I'd been thinking it's time I tried something different that would be a suitable alternative to these for birthdays and other events. I guess working full time again has been a shock to my system, and there hasn't been much time to 'trial' recipes as well as actually baking them for specific people.

Anyway, when I saw how yummy The Domestic Novice's tray bake looked I realised that there's been nothing wrong with what I've been doing so far, and that I shouldn't stress about trying to create something elaborate.

So thank you, Domestic Novice, for reminding me that the simple things are often the best!
